A storm is brewing in the world of big tech, & it’s all centered around Apple, ChatGPT, & Elon Musk’s AI, Grok. The core of the issue? Musk is accusing Apple of giving OpenAI’s ChatGPT an unfair advantage on its platforms, effectively kneecapping his own AI chatbot, Grok.
Let's unpack what’s really going on here, because it’s a pretty big deal with some serious implications for the future of AI.

Apple & ChatGPT: A Match Made in AI Heaven?

First off, it's true that Apple & OpenAI have teamed up. Apple recently announced a partnership to integrate ChatGPT into its new AI system, "Apple Intelligence." This is a MAJOR move. We're talking about embedding ChatGPT's capabilities directly into iPhones, iPads, & Macs.
Think about it: soon, you’ll be able to use ChatGPT through Siri & new writing tools across Apple’s operating systems. When the new iOS 18, iPadOS 18, & macOS Sequoia launch, they'll be powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o model. & Apple has even said they plan to integrate the even more powerful GPT-5 when the next-next-gen operating systems come out.
For users, this could be a game-changer. For businesses, the potential is HUGE. Imagine having AI-powered customer service that’s seamlessly integrated into the devices people use every single day. This is where a platform like Arsturn could become incredibly valuable. Arsturn helps businesses build no-code AI chatbots trained on their own data. With the kind of deep OS integration Apple is planning, the ability to have a custom, intelligent chatbot interacting with customers on their favorite devices could be a massive advantage.
Of course, Apple is being careful about privacy. They’ve said that for users who access ChatGPT through these new integrations, their IP addresses will be obscured & OpenAI won’t store their requests. You'll have to opt-in to use the feature, & you won't need an OpenAI account to do so.

Elon Musk Cries Foul

This is where things get spicy. Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but is now a major competitor with his own AI company, xAI, is not happy. He’s accused Apple of giving ChatGPT special treatment in the App Store & has even threatened to sue, calling it an “unequivocal antitrust violation.”
Musk’s argument is that Apple is making it impossible for any other AI app to reach the #1 spot in the App Store. He points to the fact that his own AI, Grok, despite a major new update & a surge in popularity, has been stuck at #5. He also claims that his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), is the top news app but isn't getting the recognition it deserves from Apple.
Musk believes that Apple is rigging the system to favor ChatGPT, not just through the App Store rankings but also through editorial features & the deep OS integration we just talked about. He’s essentially saying that Apple is putting its thumb on the scale for OpenAI, which he has his own separate beef with.

Apple’s Rebuttal: A Fair & Unbiased Platform

Apple, for its part, has pushed back against Musk’s accusations. They’ve stated that their App Store is “fair & free of bias.” According to Apple, app rankings are determined by a combination of “charts, algorithms, & expert editorial curation using objective criteria.”
In other words, Apple is saying that the App Store is a meritocracy, & they don’t play favorites. They’ve also pointed out that their goal is to help users discover new apps & to give developers a platform to showcase their work.
To be fair to Apple, there is some evidence to support their claim. For example, another AI app, DeepSeek, actually hit #1 on the App Store earlier this year. Perplexity, another AI contender, also reached the top spot in India. This does seem to suggest that it's not impossible for a non-ChatGPT app to reach the top. Some reports even indicate that Grok itself may have hit #1 for a time.

The Bigger Picture: A War for AI Dominance

So, is Apple really favoring ChatGPT? The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
On the one hand, it's undeniable that the deep integration of ChatGPT into Apple's ecosystem gives it a significant advantage. It's a powerful endorsement from one of the biggest tech companies in the world. When you're talking about business automation & website optimization, having that kind of built-in presence is a dream. For a company using a tool like Arsturn to build a custom AI chatbot, this kind of widespread AI adoption is a rising tide that lifts all boats. The more people get used to interacting with AI, the more open they'll be to using it for customer service & lead generation.
On the other hand, Musk's claims of a rigged App Store might be a bit of an exaggeration, especially since other AI apps have managed to climb to the top. It's also worth remembering that Musk has a long & complicated history with OpenAI, so his accusations are likely colored by that rivalry.
What we're really seeing is a battle for the future of AI playing out in real-time. Apple has chosen its partner, at least for now, & that has sent shockwaves through the industry. Whether this will lead to a full-blown legal battle remains to be seen.
One thing is for sure: the world of AI is moving at lightning speed, & the competition is only going to get more intense. It'll be fascinating to see how it all shakes out.
